Favorite Praise and Worship Songs
I’m inviting you to guess what common thread is woven into each of my favorite praise and worship songs. I love praise and worship songs of all sorts and sizes, but there’s one particular type I love best. See if you can guess what kind.
Years ago, a lovely lady—who has been my forever friend since—taught me a short song while we attended the same Bible study. She told me she sang “You are My Hiding Place” quietly to herself in the lonely halls of a hospital when she was working night shifts. She said she never knew what emergencies and challenges were just around the corner in her career. To this day, she still loves God, still loves music, and still enjoys her profession. The song she taught me stuck with me and comforted me whenever I was afraid.
Another close friend introduced me to a song that tugged at my soul and wooed me closer to Christ. She sang “As the Deer” much better than I did, but I enjoyed singing it when no one was around. It expressed perfectly the longing we both had for a deeper intimacy with our Creator. My friend and I also shared the burden of waiting for life longings that took years to be fulfilled; later, we rejoiced together when the Lord answered, “Yes” to both of us.
Another special friend, whom I’ve known since I was six, pointed out a favorite song of hers. Although she wasn’t the first person to introduce me to “The Power of Your Love,” I thought of her when I sang it. I thought of how God rescued her from near death and restored her health so she could continue praising Him and blessing others with all the joy of the Lord that permeates her being.
Have you guessed what these songs have in common?
While writing this post, I realized my favorite songs have two things in common.
The first one is: They brought back good memories of visits with beloved friends. I can’t wait to sing favorite praise and worship songs in heaven with sincere sisters and brothers in the Lord—it will be pure joy.
The second one is: The songs are based on Bible verses. The Word of God has been woven into the lyrics, notes, and beats of each one. The Word, inspired by the God who breathed life into us, breathed hope into me when I sang them. As I offered my heart to the Lord in worship and praise, I received power, love, and wisdom back through the very words I sang.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 KJV
